Clean Truck Check
Clean Truck Check:

Clean Truck Check is an initiative from the California Air Resource Board (CARB) that requires heavy-duty vehicles that travel in the state of California to regularly submit electronic emissions inspections. This includes both in-state and out-of-state vehicles that operate on California public roads.

More formally called Heavy Duty Inspection and Maintenance (HD I/M) — Clean Truck Check is an emissions-reduction program for diesel and alternative fuel heavy-duty vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 14,000 pounds. HD I/M applies to the trucks, buses, and motorhomes that create a majority of the emissions on the road.

Although heavy-duty vehicles only make up 3% of the vehicles on the state’s roads, CARB says they create over half of the smog-causing pollution and fine particulate matter. Stricter regulations can help reduce these emissions and tackle the state’s hefty air quality problems.

Clean Truck Check Exemptions:

Although most heavy-duty vehicles must abide by the CARB Clean Truck Check, some are exempt from the program. The following vehicles do not need to meet these emissions requirements:

-
Zero-emissions vehicles
-
Authorized emergency vehicles
-
Military tactical vehicles
-
Motorhomes registered outside of California
-
Historical vehicles
-
Vehicles operating under an experimental permit
-
New vehicles with engines certified to the most stringent NOx standard (less than or equal to 0.01 g/bhp-hr)
-
Gasoline vehicles
